Team
Michelle Hulin - Assistant Professor
Michelle did her PhD and first postdoc position at the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB)/University of Reading in the UK (2013-2020), she then did a second postdoc at The Sainsbury Laboratory in Norwich, UK (2020-2023). Her research focuses on population genomics and evolution of plant pathogenic bacteria and effector biology. Outside the lab she enjoys jogging, travelling and spending time with her rescue greyhound Remus.
Daniel Maddock - Postdoctoral researcher
Dan undertook his PhD at the University of the West of England (UWE) investigating the role of the rhizosphere in the development of Acute Oak Decline (2019-2022), and continued at UWE in a 50:50 post-doc (2023-2024). His research has focused on the taxonomic identification of novel isolates, metagenomic population studies of bacteria and the evolution and spread of plant pathogens. In his free time Dan enjoys going to gigs, running and cooking.
Sanju Bijarniya - PhD student
Sanju holds an MSc in Molecular Biotechnology from the University of Birmingham in the UK, where she studied the sucrose-6-phosphate hydrolase protein in Pseudomonas syringae.
Currently, as a PhD student, she researches the pathogenicity of Pseudomonas syringae strains causing blueberry stem blight, focusing on genomic diversity, toxins, and interactions with fungal pathogens.
In her free time, Sanju enjoys travelling and trying new cuisines.
Brooke Ognian - Undergraduate Research Assistant
Brooke is an undergraduate student at Michigan State University majoring in Genomics and Molecular Genetics and Microbiology with a minor in Plant, Animal, and Microbial Biotechnology. In her free time Brooke enjoys playing sports, shopping, doing puzzles, and spending time with friends.
Ambika Sharma - Undergraduate Research Assistant
Ambika is currently a student at Michigan State University majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and is working for Dr. Hulin's lab as a research intern to gain lab experience and exposure to official research. Her hobbies include playing the piano, walking her dog, and learning new languages.
